The governing body for Workers’ Compensation known as the NCCI is changing an important variable that can significantly affect everyone’s Experience Modifier (E-Mod) beginning January 1, 2013. They are changing the current “Split Point” of $5,000 to $10,000.
Every loss is divided into primary and excess portions. Currently the split (known as the split point) between primary loss and excess loss is $5,000. 100% of the primary loss is used in the calculation of your Experience Mod. On the other hand, only a small percentage (typically 8-15%) of the Excess Loss (the amount of the loss that exceeds $5,000) is used to calculate your Experience Mod.
Effective January 1, 2013, the Split Point will be increasing to $10,000, and will continue to increase to $15,000 over the next 3 years. Beyond that point, the NCCI has announced the Split Point will rise annually to account for inflation. For those employers having loss frequency issues, now more than ever is the time to address and review hiring practices, safety measures and return to work programs.
